Alabama History:

On December 14, 1819, Alabama was officially proclaimed as one of the states of the USA. After its statehood, the Indian wars forced a number of Native Americans to flee the state, which led to the arrival of white settlers, who arrived in large numbers during the 19th century. For more than seventy years after the Civil War, Alabama was considered to be very poor. The heavily-rural state only based its economy on sharecropping and cotton. After the white settlers regained control over the state via extralegal and legal means, they were able to re-establish social and political dominance over the African Americans.

Alabama State Alias:

Alabama generally does not have an official state nickname. However, the state has long been known as the “Yellowhammer State” after the civil war. This was largely attributed by an event when a company of soldiers from the state wore uniforms with yellow cloth trimmings, they were then nicknamed “Yellowhammers”.

Yellowhammer is actually a common name to the Northern Flicker Woodpecker, which also happens to be the official state bird of Alabama. These birds are best known for their striking bright yellow feathers right beneath its tails and wings. Another nickname for Alabama is “The Cotton State” because it is centrally located in the cotton belt. Also, the state’s cotton production was a primary influence in the culture and growth of Alabama.

Alabama Population:

In 2013, the United States Census Bureau estimates Alabama’s population at 4,822,023, making the state the 23rd largest population of all the states in the US. This recent estimate showed a 0.9% increase since the last census in 2010. Population density of Alabama is 94.7 people per square mile, ranking in the 27th spot as to the largest density in the United States. According to the bureau, the state’s population could reach up to 5.2 million by the year 2025, about a 7.8% increase from its present population.

Alabama Industries:

Industries in Alabama include iron and steel products, lumber, paper, mining, wood products, plastic products, apparel, cars and trucks. The state is also a key producer of electronic and aerospace products, specifically around the Huntsville area, the site of NASA’s George C. Marshall Space Flight Center.

Much of Alabama’s economic growth started during the 1990s after the state expanded its automotive manufacturing industry. It is in Alabama where we can find Hyundai Motor Manufacturing, Honda Manufacturing, Mercedes-Benz US International and Toyota Motor Manufacturing. The automobile industry of Alabama, since its conception during the early 1990s, has successfully generated more than 67,000 new jobs. Today, Alabama is currently the 4th in the US in terms of vehicle exports.

Alabama Social Demographics:

There are eleven metropolitan areas in Alabama and five combined statistical areas. The metropolitan areas include Mobile, Huntsville, Birmingham-Hoover, Montgomery, Anniston-Oxford, Florence-Muscle Shoals, Tuscaloosa, Decatur, Dothan, Auburn-Opelika and Gadsden. For the combined statistical area, it includes Birmingham-Hoover-Cullman, Huntsville-Decatur, Mobile-Daphne-Fairhope, Columbus-Auburn-Opelika and Dothan-Enterprise-Ozark.

Alabama Metropolitan Areas:

Alabama Popular Sports Teams:

Alabama has a very interesting sports heritage. Football is the number one choice for most Alabama fans, although there are other great Alabama-based sports teams for practically every sport out there. One of the most popular teams is the Alabama Crimson Tide, a collegiate football team that has competed for generations. Its rival team, the Auburn University Tigers, regularly compete in a rival completion known as the Iron Bowl so as to identify who can have the bragging rights for the following year. Alabama fans are so enthusiastic about the game that they even celebrate its fall weekend like a holiday.

Alabama Police Department:
