California History:
It was during the 1700s when the Spanish missionaries first step foot in California. However, it was not until 1847 when California became a part of the US territory as part of a treaty that ended the Mexican-American war. A year later in 1848, the discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill significantly inspired a great number of settlers, all heading out to the west coast in the hopes of finding their fortune there.
In 1850, California officially became the 31st state of the United States. It is now considered as the third largest state, following Alaska and Texas. California leads the over-all agricultural production in the entire nation, thanks to its millions of acres of farmland. California also houses famous national parks and cultural institutions like Disneyland, Hollywood, Alcatraz, the Yosemite National Park, Angel Island and the Golden Gate Bridge.
California State Alias:
California has long been called “The Golden State”. The popular designation was later made the Official State Alias in 1968. The designation is specifically appropriate since the state’s present modern development can be tracked back in 1848 when gold was discovered and fields of golden poppies are noted each spring all across California. Also, a museum was opened late in 1998 at California State Archives in Sacramento. The Golden State Museum is created to bring to life all the momentous events of the colorful history of California through a series of interpretive and innovative exhibits.
California Population:
Considered as a state with the most diverse population with no majority, California has a population of around 38,441,387, this according to a recent estimate in 2013. With a yearly growth rate of 1.09%, this state is the 19th fastest growing state in the US. In 2012, California’s population was recorded at an impressive rate, with an increase in numbers year after year. During the early years of 1850, California had only 92,597 people. But after the prominence of the gold rush during the mid-19th century, the population rose to over 300% and has since then continued to grow over the years.
California Industries:
California is the US’ leading industrial state. In fact, it is ranked first in practically almost every general manufacturing category: from number of employees to number of establishments, total payroll, value of shipments, value added by manufacture and a new capital spending. California is distinctively ranked as being the leader in fabricated metals, machinery, food processing, agricultural products, aerospace technology, computers, and other industries.
Of the many industries, aerospace and computer manufacturers stand out among the state’s largest publicly-owned and managed corporations. Among the biggest names in the industry based in California include tandem Computers, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, Varian Associates and Silicon Graphics. These companies make up the famous Silicon Valley in Santa Clara County in southern San Francisco.
As with the private companies in California, popular companies include Del Monte, Levi Strauss, Ernest and Julio Gallo Winery and Sunkist Growers. These companies have continued their strength in the manufacturing industry, with more than a hundred thousand employees and billions of revenues each year.
California Metropolitan Areas:
California has two metropolitan areas: San Jose and San Francisco — both recapturing their peaks in employment since 2008. The kind of success that San Jose and San Francisco have seen is however, not reflective of the rest of the state. Still, it is quite an interesting fact that California’s economy- brought about by these two metropolitan areas has become a part of the US’ economy. Experts even look at how California is determined in taking the whole nation to the next level of economy, although admittedly, they say that the state is inherently different in terms of concentration of technology, geography and political leadership.
California Popular Sports Teams:
California has a lot of different professional and college sports teams, alongside huge sports domes and complexes. The state is home to 3 NFL teams: the San Francisco 49’ers, the Oakland Raiders and the San Diego Chargers. It is also home to 5 different professional baseball teams: the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A.’s from the San Francisco bay area, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels from the greater Los Angeles area, and the San Diego Padres from the San Diego Area.
