Michigan History:

Indian tribes were the very first settlers in Michigan when Etienne Brule, the first European, arrived in 1618. After the revolutionary war, the United States acquired major parts of the region which continued the constant conflict between the US forces and British people and their respective Indian allies. When the British was defeated in the American Revolutionary War, the Treaty of Paris was opened and resulted to the expansion of the boundaries of the US that included all the land south of Canada and East of the Mississippi River. At that time, Michigan was still part of the “Old Northwest”. After Ohio was admitted to the union in 1802, Michigan was part of the territory in Indiana. By 1805, the Territory of Michigan was finally established.

Michigan State Alias:

Michigan is officially called the “Great Lake State” since its shores touch four of the five Great Lakes. Also, the state has more than ten thousand in land lakes. Back then, Michigan was also nicknamed “The Wolverine State” especially during a huge 1835 dispute over the Toledo Strip, a land bordering between Ohio and Michigan. Rumors had it that Ohioans gave the alias because they described the Michiganians as being bloodthirsty and as vicious as wolverines.
