Tennessee History:

Before statehood, in 16th century, there were three known Spanish expeditions to have passed through the land that is now known as Tennessee namely: The Hernando de Soto expedition in 1540, Tristan de Luna in 1559 and Juan Pardo expedition in 1567. Their stay was only short. In 1763, Great Britain took over the area, but on the 1st of June 1796, Tennessee was admitted to the union as the 16th state.

Tennessee State Alias:

Tennessee had several nicknames which include: Big Benders, Butternuts, Big Bend, Hog and Hominy and The mother of Southwestern Statesmen. But the official state nickname is “The Volunteer State” which originated in the War of 1812. It was due to the bravery and the number of soldiers who volunteered to fight for the state during the Battle of New Orleans.

Tennessee Population:

The first reported population of Tennessee was in 1790, wherein the people only totaled to 35,691. Ten years later, it grew to 105,602 or 200%. According to the US Census Bureau, Tennessee has a population of 6,495,978 which is ranked 17th of the most populated state in the United States despite being a smaller state in terms of size (ranked 36th largest state) in the country. Currently, Tennessee’s population growth rate is ranked 23rd in the country at the rate of 0.86%.

Tennessee Industries:

Tennessee can be considered an industrial state for the most part as the majority of the state’s population is living in urban areas. Products that are vital in the industry are chemicals, textile, furniture, apparel electrical machinery and leather goods. Food processing, metal and lumber are other products that Tennessee produces. In terms of agriculture, soybean contributes about 11% of its agricultural receipts. Also, the state is a leading Tobacco producer. Other income comes from livestock, cotton, dairy products and greenhouse and nursery products.

Tennessee Social Demographics:

According to Census, Tennessee’s breakdown of population according to race is: 77.6% are identified as White, 16.7% are African-American or Black, 4.6%are Hispanic or Latino, 0.3% are American Indian and Alaska Native, 1.4% are Asian American, 1.7% are multi racial, 0.1% Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander and 3.6% consist of other race not mentioned. For ancestries, the most common are American, African-American, Irish, English and German.

Tennessee Metropolitan Areas:

According to the record by the United States Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA), there are ten metropolitan areas in Tennessee namely: Nashville (the state capital), Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Kingsport-Bristol-Bristol, Clarksville, Johnson City, Morristown, Jackson and Cleveland.

Tennessee Popular Sports Teams:

In the National Football League (NFL), Tennessee is well represented by its professional sports team, the Titans who where naturally from Houston and only relocated in Nashville in the 1997 season. Nashville Predators began playing in 1999 in the National Hockey League (NHL) and Memphis Grizzlies for the NBA in 1995. For minor league sports, Tennessee has a number of teams for different events, like: Chattanooga FC and Knoxville Force for soccer; Chattanooga Lookouts, Jackson Generals, Memphis Redbirds, Nashville Sounds and Tennessee Smokies for baseball; Franklin Knights for basketball; Knoxville Ice Bears for Hockey; and Knoxville Nighthawks for indoor football.

FBI data show that Tennessee has the highest violent crime rate in 2012. The rate was as high as 643.6 for every 100,000 residents. Crimes include murder, rape, aggravated assault and robbery. In records, The Volunteer State has been ranked among the 10 most violent states in the nation for 10 years. In 2013, Tennessee tops the list. Most of the violent crimes are concentrated in the major metropolitan areas where Memphis is rated 5th of the nation’s worst state and Nashville ranked 18th. The records also show that there is a correlation between the high school/college graduation rates and crime rates wherein the lower the rate of people with bachelor’s degree or higher, the higher the crime rate. As with Tennessee, the percentage of the population with bachelor’s degree or higher is only 24.3%.

Tennessee Police Department:

According to the US Bureau of Justice Statistics’ 2008, Tennessee has 15,976 sworn police officers. The rate is about 256 police officers for 100,000 residents. The de-facto state police agency of Tennessee is the Tennessee Highway Patrol, which is primarily responsible for enforcing all the state and federal laws that relates to traffic. They are also tasked to protect lives, properties as well as the constitutional rights of the state’s citizens.

THP was founded back in December of 1929 as a replacement of the rather unpopular law enforcement organization Tennessee State Police Force, which was said to have been based after the Texas Rangers and were tasked to obtain taxes and feeds from its citizens. In 1957, THP set the record as the very first policy agency to use helicopters in the course of their patrol work in United States.
