Wisconsin History:

Wisconsin’s history is not only a story about the early settlers who have occupied Wisconsin at the time of its statehood, but also of those Native American tribesmen who also settled in this state, along with the British and French colonists, who were among the very first wave of Europeans to live there. Since its statehood on May 29, 1848, Wisconsin, being the nation’s 30th state, has long been ethnically diverse, with the Yankees as the very first ones to come from New York and New England. These settlers dominated the state’s finance, politics, industry and education. Years after, a huge number of Europeans then followed the Yankees, along with German Americans, Scandinavians, and minority groups of Dutch Americans, Belgian Americans, Finnish Americans, Swiss Americans and Irish Americans.

Wisconsin State Alias:

Wisconsin is nicknamed “The Badger State” because according to Governor Scott Walker, the ancestors of the state came there with all the hopes of living the American dream by mining. Accordingly, the state is named not only because of the abundance of animals there, but also because back then, the state has always been known for its mining and that, each citizen must be able to continue living the dream by maintaining mining in the state in 2012 and beyond.

Wisconsin Population:

The United States Census Bureau estimates that the total population of Wisconsin, as of July 1, 2013 is 5,742,713, barely a 1% increase after the recent 2010 census. The six biggest ancestry groups from the total population include the Germans (42.6%), Polish (9.3%), Norwegian (8.5%), English (6.5%), and Italian (6.1%). Except for Trempealeau, Menominee and Vernon, German is the biggest ancestry in each Wisconsin state. The state also has the biggest percentage of citizen of Polish descent of any state. Although it was the Germans who hugely settled throughout Wisconsin, the biggest concentration of them can be found in Milwaukee. About 86% of Wisconsin of African-American ancestry lives in four key cities: Kenosha, Beloit, Racine and Milwaukee, with Milwaukee being the home to about 75% of Wisconsin’s black Americans. In the Great Lakes area, only Cleveland and Detroit have big percentages of African-American residents.

Economy in Wisconsin is identified in six different categories: agriculture, manufacturing, consumer goods, tourism, film industry and energy. In 2010, the total gross state product of Wisconsin amounted to $248.3 billion, the 21st in rank among all the US states. The economic output of this state from manufacturing was $48.9 billion for 2008, making it the 10th biggest among states in terms of manufacturing gross domestic products. The manufacturing industry in Wisconsin account for about twenty percent of their gross domestic product, and their per capita personal income was at $35,239 in 2008. The ten biggest employers in Wisconsin include Wal-Mart, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Public Schools of Milwaukee, the US Postal Service, the Department of Corrections of Wisconsin, Menards, Marshfield Clinic, as well as the Department of Veterans Affairs of Wisconsin, Target Corporation and City of Milwaukee.

Wisconsin Social Demographics:

The 2010 census conducted by the United States Census Bureau indicated that Wisconsin is made up of various racial compositions. 6.2% White American (83.3% non-Hispanic white, 2.9% White Hispanic), 6.3% Black or African-American,1.0% American Indian and Alaska Native, 2.3% Asian American, 1.8% Multiracial American and 2.4% for some other races. Of that very same year, about 6% of the total population was of Latino or Hispanic Origin.

The Metropolitan Statistical Area of Madison, WI is a region of this state that consisted of 3 main counties, which is secured by Madison City, according to the United States Office of Management and Budget.
