Washington History:
Washington was named after George Washington and was granted statehood in 1889. The state, the only one named after a US President makes an excellent harbor shave, thanks to its coastal location, makes a major role in trade with Canadian and Alaskan countries across the Pacific Rim. You can find the majestic Mount Rainier, considered the highest peak of the nation, soaring high above Seattle. Another landmark is the Mount St. Helens that erupted in 1980, and said to be the deadliest and the most economically-destructive event ever recorded in US history. Furthermore, it is also in Washington where you can find the country’s leading producer of apples, the Evergreen state. You can also find here the world-famous coffee chain, Starbucks.
Washington State Alias:
It was on November 11, 1889 when Washington became the 42nd state of the nation. Washington is the only state named after a US President. Nicknamed “The Evergreen State” by CT Conover, a pioneer Seattle historian and realtor, the alias is very much fitting because of the state’s richness in evergreen forests. In 1893, the nickname was finally adopted by the state’s legislature. In 1846, the western hemlock was chosen as the State tree after Washington was then joked about the lack of symbol for the state. After further debates in the legislature, it was finally signed into law by Governor Mon C. Wallgren, then governor of the state.
Washington Population:
Ranked as the 13th nation with the largest population all across the nation, Washington has a population of 6,897,012 according to the United States Census Bureau. Based on its recent census in 2010, Washington showed an increase of 2.6% in its population. The state’s population density is 103 citizens per square mile, making it 25th largest density in the whole nation.
Washington Industries:
It was during the 1990s when Washington had the busiest years, as far as the industry of technology is concerned. During these years, technology companies began to show up. Computer-related and software business all account for most of the major activities, while traditional manufacturing companies continue to grow. Until today, computers, software, as well as other technology-related industries still make up the state’s largest single portion in Washington technology companies.
Washington is also considered as one of the top fifteen film-production states all across the US. Video and films are constantly noticed in the state, representing at least a hundred million dollars a year. The state has about 1,500 film and video businesses, which in turn, provide jobs for more than 5,000 state residents. Washington Social Demographics:
Based on the 2010 Census, Washington has various racial and ethnic compositions. It included 77.35 White (72.5% non-Hispanic, 4.8% white Hispanics), 3.6% Black and African Americans, 1.5% Native Americans, 7.2% Asians, 0.6% Pacific Islanders, 4.7% of two or more races, and 5.1% from some other race. The state fairly has a general Latino and Hispanic population of 11.2%.
Washington Metropolitan Areas:
Washington DC, the state’s capital region and metropolitan area, include all federal districts and other parts of the US States of Virginia and Maryland, and some small parts of West Virginia. According to the US Office of Management and Budget, the metropolitan area is called the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV metropolitan statistical area, and includes key cities in Washington and Virginia County of Arlington, as well as the City of Alexandria.
Washington Popular Sports Teams:
In Washington, you can find a lot of athletes and sports teams that participate in practically all levels of sports. The state is home to various major sports venues such as the RFK Stadium the Verizon Center, Nationals Park and the FedEx Field. You can also find here two of the biggest sports television networks: Comcast Sports Net based in Maryland and Mid-Atlantic Sports Network.
Washington’s NFL Team, the Washington Redskins, is accordingly, the second-most valuable professional sports team in the US. This football team is so popular and regularly sells out the biggest stadium in the NFL, the FedEX Field in Landover, Washington. Another sports team is the Washington Wizards, the local NBA team of the state and regularly plays their home games at the Verizon Center.

Washington Crime Statistics:
During the early 1990s, Washington DC was said to be the “murder capital” of the US, with 474 homicide cases in 1990 alone. Crimes were associated after the introduction of crack cocaine in the late 1980s. However, it was brought down year after year after the Metropolitan Police Department strengthened its drive to deal with such cases.

Washington Police Department:
The Washington State Patrol is the state’s police agency. It has full law enforcement authority all across the state of Washington, with some caveats for Federal property, plus limited authorities on some Indian reservations. This department is also one of the two state law enforcement agencies that is considered to be an overall authority law-enforcement agency.
